holistic-acupunctHolism as a health concept has existed for long outside of academic circles, but only relatively recently has the modern medical establishment begun to mix it into the mainstream health care system.
Historically, Holistic health has not been very widely and famously practiced in North America. According to Robbie Davis-Floyd in “Medical Anthropology- Modern Midwives, Issue 20”, she states in her issues that there are “links and connectivity between traditions, ancestry, home remedies. Thus the holistic remedy though not given so much importance in today’s days, holds its place right where it was in the past. The place, where it’s still respected for its remedial qualities, though temporary as it seems. But before we talk about holistic medicines, let’s learn in brief about it and its types.
Holistic medicines, are actually an alternative medicines that are used other than the allopathic or the antibiotic medicines that are used in present days.
Alternative Medicine refers to techniques that are not currently accepted by “conventional” practitioners. But now the definition of “conventional practitioners” is quickly changing. Thus the techniques that are now considered part of Alternative Medicine will soon be considered part of “conventional” medicine. The terms Holistic Healing and Holistic Medicine are slightly more stable than Alternative Medicine and are therefore preferable. It includes methods like acupuncture, massage therapy etc.
The art of Acupuncture is a healing process that has been in demand from centuries. It is also known as an alternative method for pain relief. It is not a very widely used treatment therefore some of them in far west are more skeptical about its effects. The Doctors do agree that if not a permanent one, a temporary treatment is proven to work as far as Acupuncture is concerned. They say, that in most cases acupuncture gives temporary relief of pain symptoms which are cause by such illnesses or aliments as asthma, lower back pain which usually makes the body suffer because of hyper tension. Ailments like migraine, menstrual cramps and fibromyalgia. Acupuncture is more effective when used with other pain treatments.
The Massage therapy and acupuncture are two therapies which are likely to go hand in hand. In severest of cases with acupuncture treatment it is observed by the learned and the doctors that from fifty to seventy percent of the people suffering from different kinds of ailments get short term relief. Only about twenty percent get long term relief from this treatment. Ten percent or less than that, get no relief at all. These methods help increasing the natural healing process of the body and thus induce a better and healthy living. Acupuncture, massage, acupressure etc. can be called as complementary medicines that though being non-invasive and non-pharmaceutical help in curing the innumerable health problems.
