The term “bagua” or “ba gua” is a Chinese term that has been derived from the book of I-Ching, which is a sacred Chinese text, used to predict the future. “Feng Shui Bagua” should be considered as one of the most basic and fundamental tools in the practice of Feng Shui. Anybody who wants to learn Feng Shui should also know about this.

The Chinese term “bagua” means eight areas. These eight areas cover various areas of one’s life. Feng Shui bagua is a map or chart that relates to the various aspects of a person’s life covering eight sections of the living space. These eight main sections of space are represented by what is known as “guas” of bagua map.  A bagua map might contain a ninth center section that corresponds to the eight major corresponding life areas. The layout of a bagua map shows the nine main energy centers that are most valuable to a person’s life.

This map is used by placing on the floor plan of the space that is being designed or being fixed for any problem. With the help of this map, it would be possible to pinpoint the problem areas that require immediate attention for rectification.

The Feng Shui bagua is the most important tool in Feng Shui practice which is used to understand how environment relates to various aspects of life. The eight main life areas or guas consist of: wealth, reputation, love, family and health, travel and helpful acquaintances, career and wealth, wisdom, children and creativity. Each of them is represented in corresponding area on the bagua map. The center area of the map is reserved for other areas. This representation also could be represented by a bigger square divided in 9 smaller squares or “guas” which are arranged in three lines and three rows. Such an arrangement looks like a set of floor tiles. Though it looks deceptively simple in appearance, but it is a very powerful tool in the practice of Feng Shui.

For solving any problem in life, we have to first find out to which gua the problem belongs. If it is about dissatisfaction with salary then it would relate to career and wealth gua. Thereafter, the gua map is to be overlaid over the room plan of the house to locate the area which is to be looked into to solve the problem using Feng Shui.
